Layover Lights: An Austin Holiday Adventure

Last holiday season, I found myself on a layover in Austin, Texas — and instead of catching up on sleep, we rented a car and chased lights. What started as a quick stop became one of the most magical evenings I’ve had in a layover yet.

🎄 First Stop: Lights Spectacular — Johnson City’s Holiday Magic

We headed out of the city toward Johnson City, Texas for a walk-around light experience that felt like a Hallmark scene come to life.

  • What it is: Lights Spectacular is an annual community-driven holiday light show that blankets the historic downtown, Memorial Park, and PEC headquarters with over 2 million twinkling lights — so bright, locals joke that you can see them from space. Lights Spectacular+1
  • Free & festive: Unlike most holiday light events, this one is free and entirely volunteer-run, making it feel warm, genuine, and welcoming. Lights Spectacular
  • What to expect: Walking through the lights, you’ll find festive scenes woven through oak trees and historic buildings, cheerful families and couples bundled up, and even extras like carriage rides, hay rides, and local food and drink stalls if you time it right. The Texas Signal

As soon as we stepped out of the car, we were wrapped in that holiday glow — crisp air, cheerful crowds, and everywhere lights sparkling against the Texas Hill Country sky.

Pro tip: Go early enough to explore the town square before dusk, then settle in for the lights once it gets dark — the atmosphere shifts from quaint to magical as soon as the bulbs switch on. Lights Spectacular

🚗 Road Trippin’ to the Lights

Renting a car was the best call — it gave us all the flexibility to drive out of the city, grab dinner at a local spot, and roll into Johnson City just as the lights flipped on.

  • Us in the car: Three flight attendants, tired in that familiar end-of-trip way but still giddy. Running on caffeine, inside jokes, and the simple excitement of getting to celebrate the holidays together between flights.
  • Drink of choice: Coffee in hand — still warm, riding shotgun in the cup holder. No wine yet. We were saving that for later.
  • The drive: Austin slowly fell away. Bright streetlights thinned to stoplights, then to dark stretches of road. The city glow softened into porch lights, then open sky. By the time we reached Johnson City, the night was quiet and wide, making the holiday lights ahead feel even warmer — like a welcome after a long day in motion.glow as you drove toward Johnson City?

It’s these small moments — windows down, talk turning to holiday wishes and bucket lists — that made the whole experience feel cinematic.

✨ The Takeaway

That layover wasn’t just a pause between flights — it became a mini holiday escape. It reminded me that adventure doesn’t need distance; it just needs curiosity. If you’re ever flying into Austin in December, do yourself a favor — rent a car, chase some lights, and make a layover feel like a stayover.
